I got a solution; download Version 2.1.0.47 from:
http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-linux-beta-dynamic
or
http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-linux-beta-static
extract it to its folder and use it from there. Or if you installed skype 2.1.0.47 from the repos Download the Dynamic or Static package extract it and ovewrite the file:
skype
located in
/usr/bin/
with the file
skype
from the downloaded or keep using the older version until the latest beta gets fixed.

Well this seems like a good place to put this:
I just tried Skype and it worked, no problems! Nice. Marked it in Synaptic, logged in with a username that I already have on another machine. Works. Beautiful.
I didn't even know that this old machine had a built-in microphone. Apparently it does. Woohoo!

I installed 2.1.0.47 and it crashes every time I try to write a message to any of my contacts. I tried 2.1.0.81 static from the repos, but the sound is horrible. the other people say they can't understand what I say.
Back to 2.1.0.47 and everything is ok.
Please package properly the latest version.

One time had a problem mentioned in first post. Solution was to became an owner of ~/.Skype (don't know what happened, that directory became the property of root).
