Automount USB Drives & Media Cards

I have just switched from Linux Mint 11 to PCLOS 2011.  The only problem I seem to have is that when I plug a USB drive in, or when I plug a card into my card-reader, the devices are not automatically mounted and made available.  I was able to manually mount the SD card into /media/sdcard (after creating the sdcard directory), but that is way to complicated for my sons or my wife to have to do every time.

I did find the a configuration option that claims to enable auto-mounting of removable media both on login and when the device is attached, but despite enabling that I still see no indication anywhere that the device is there and can be used (neither on the desktop, the panel at the bottom or in either Konquerer or Dolphin, where Linux Mint would show them).

Aside from this one issue, this is far and away the most polished, awesome Linux distro I have come across - Kudos!

Any ideas, please?

Do you have a Device Notifier widget on your panel? I don't like auto mounting of any device, so in my Device Notifier I have it set to just notify me when a removable device is attached. I can then choose what, if anything I want to do with the device, at that time, or a bit later. If I wanted auto mounting of certain devices, I could set it up by right clicking, then choosing Device Notifier --> Device Notifier Settings --> Device Actions or Device Notifier --> Device Notifier Settings --> Automounting.

I also dislike any auto-mount of inserted devices.

But, each inserted device (or more correctly its partitions) appear in the "Places" panel of Dolphin and when clicked on to view are automatically mounted .......  in fact the user would not really be aware that they were or were not mounted unless s/he looked closely when hovering on the icon in Places.

As O-P has said, the mounting options in Device Notifier are quite powerful and can be applied per device.

This seems to have fixed itself after a reboot. It's working now. Weird.

sorry to bring up an old topic but it seemed useful to demonstrate i'd tried to solve this before posting!
I've got device notifier on but when i insert the card reader it is not recognised in either Dolphin or by the Device notifier
any help much appreciated as when i try connecting the camera (canon ixus) directly it 9/10 times crashes the system

Hmm... since the original poster's problem appears to have been solved/worked around, you might have better luck starting a new thread.  That said, this kinda sounds like an incipient hardware problem related to insufficient current available from the USB system to support this camera.  What kind of computer are we talking about (laptop, netbook, desktop, what?)?  Have you tried different ports (on different USB controllers)?  It may be you have a set of ports with weak buss voltages.

So what's different between the two machines?  Look at hardware and software differences when considering this question, please.

There's a thread somewhere about how to ask for help here, lemme see... Ah. Here it is!  (It might not hurt for you to review this thread and try asking again.)
