pae kernel = no openGL support

OK, so I've known about this problem wit my machine for a long time (several months anyway). Whenever I boot the pae kernel I lose openGL support and the graphics rendering goes to pot (for lack a better term)...

machine is an HP p7-1054

AMD Athlon II X4 645
Integrated graphics using ATI Radeon 4200
6gb ram

I'm running KDE 2012-2
kernel 2.6.38.8-pclos3.pae.bfs

As long as I boot the 2.6.38.8-pclos3.bfs kernel (no pae), openGL support is enabled and everything runs smooth and fast but then I loose 3gb of ram. Another strange fact... the only version where everything works is the (6gb ram with openGL support) is pclos 64bit test edition.

That last fact indicates this problem should be fixable, I'm just out of ideas as to how. Maybe just hold out for 64bit release is the best option but then I miss the opportunity to find out why this is going on...

Sound like an incorrect build of the dkms driver  for pae kernel .... not 100% sure ...

You could try to boot a non pae kernel, remove the pae kernel, and then reinstall the pae kernel, this will force a complete rebuild of the dkms tree.

actually, i've recently done a complete install with 2012 release and the problem has followed me. so i feel confident it must be somewhere else, but thanks for the help.

Try to look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log,  after booting the pae kernel, and after booting the non pae ....
I'm also using a pae kernel, (nvidia card), without issues ...

That's the fglrx module ... IIRC there was an update very recently ... possibly a glitch upon post-installation ... when dkms is rebuilt ... I remain of the idea as before, I would try to rebuild the dkms ...

If the above would not work, I would try to remove the fglrx driver and related dkms and would try to install the driver coming from ati/amd website ...
