Google Inc. is close to launching a cloud-storage service that would rival one of Silicon Valley's hottest start-ups, cloud-storage provider Dropbox Inc., according to people familiar with the matter.

Like Dropbox, Google's storage service, called Drive, is a response to the growth of Internet-connected mobile devices like smartphones and tablets and the rise of "cloud computing," or storing files online so that they can be retrieved from multiple devices, these people said.

Drive allows people to store photos, documents and videos on Google's servers so that they could be accessible from any Web-connected device and allows them to easily share the files with others, these people said. If a person wants to email a video shot from a smartphone, for instance, he can upload it to the Web through the Drive mobile app and email people a link to the video rather than a bulky file.

The Google service, which is expected to launch in the coming weeks or months, will be free for most consumers and businesses. Google will charge a fee to those who want to store a large amount of files, the people familiar with the matter said.

More likely the reason is how we can collect more of the users data to sell and make a profit from.

Drive allows people to store photos, documents and videos on Google's servers so that they could be accessible from any Web-connected device and allows them to easily share the files with others, these people said. If that was the reason than Google wouldn't be in the marked. Please show me just one person who only uses this sort of system for photos and videos.

Just who are these "people familiar with the matter" Huh

That sounds like the best thing.  Problem with free places like Google Drive
the speed is so slow anything of any size takes an hour or two to upload
and then download.   ADrive is flexible but the slowest speeds again.

Probably the people who ran Megaupload. "...people familiar with the matter".
OR, ... Maybe the FBI ?  Shocked I'm still wondering how the FBI will view Megauloads content to figure what's legit, and what sends the megaupload staff to jail. Big job.

GOOGLE CLOUD STORAGE .
Golly, I hope it don't rain  Cool

I have a Hard drive in my Comp, portable hard drives, External Hard Drives, sound a lot more safe than the track record being made by 'Clouds'. Just an excuse for Google to peruse your sacred data methinks.  Roll Eyes

Have to admit YouCanToo's http://myphotos.mypclinuxos.com/ does the job as well as any other pic host, probably better, no tricks, just straight storage Wink

The problems with "clouds" is they go from white fluffy beautiful things to dark and grey violent things that try to blast you (or your data) into a crispy critter with a lightening bolt.

Google Drive: Finally coming this April  (? ? ? ?)

Google’s online storage service, rumored to be called GDrive is like the wolf in the fable, The Boy Who Cried Wolf. Well, after long history of false alarms, the storage drive might just see the day in early April, according to my well placed sources familiar with company’s plans. I say might, just because of Google’s history with the Google Drive.

According to the details from my sources, Google is going to offer 1 Gb of storage space for free, but will charge for more storage. The market leader Dropbox currently offers 2 Gb for free.

Google’s product will come with a local client and the web interface will look much like the Google Docs interface. Interestingly, it will launch for Google Apps customers and will be domain specific as well. Google has also built an API for third party apps with this service so folks can store content from other apps in the Google drive. My sources are impressed, so far with what they have seen.

Google is the devil

I know it is the hip thing to do to completely piss on everything Google does, but I have to ask, why would you trust ANY third party who is offering a similar service for the sole reason of making money any more than you would trust Google?  Where was the laughter when Dropbox or any others hit the market?

I know I know, I'm the big Google apologist on this forum, but the immediate hatred for each and everything that Google does is getting tired.

Why not, instead of immediately painting Google as some terrible devil that is trying to destroy everyone, you think about how the service might be useful.  No one said you HAD to use it to store personal and/or sensitive information.  Why not use it for non-sensitive information.  My experience has been that most of Google's products function quite well, so if you use it with caution, then it might be a rather useful service.

Feel free to now begin roasting me for my use of rational thought.

I don't  Wink

Seriously, where is all the bandwidth going to come from?  Someone will have to pay for it and those someones will be all of us, probably through advertising.
