All,

I know the title to this post may seem provocative, however, it does reflect
what I am thinking about PCLinuxOS.

For those that want to keep their finger on the pulse of PCLinxOS, the place
to go is Twitter.  Of late, there have fair few tweets.  Just before December, I
could see Texstar tweet the progress of the on-going effort to make a
64-bit distribution. Since 1, January. Nada. So, is it done?

Truely, the tweets used to come fast and furious. Now its once a week?

Also, somewhere in the middle of December, Texstar declared a shutdown of
Suggested Packages until the new year. By my calendar, its 9 February and I do
not see its resumption.

Where are the updates? I have a heap of packages installed on my machine and
every day or so I check for updates. Nada.

In a previously worded post, respondents comments (rightly so) that only when
packages get updated will I see updates. Well, I have a lot and I see no updates.

The point that I am making is, sometime back last year I would see heaps of updates
a week. Now there is nothing.

People will say, "Well, step up become a package builder". I would love to. Without
Package Suggest, what do I build?  Do I build and install my own packages and then get put into
"Not repos  supported" group?

Texstar, what is the story?

AussieBear.

Please also read the Software Announcements and the News boards  Smiley
=> PASS don't get updates at the moment (so please switch temp. to another "public" repo) - problems with it
=> other things answered in previous posts  Smiley

Hmmmm ... Yes very provocative ... and i shall respond even though i probably know i shouldnt ...

Once upon a time ... there was this Cowboy Packager Guy ... just say he had a name summin like Texstar ... he starting building his own packages until a distro was born ... now lets skip a few years on and the Distro has flourished ... got lots of variants and is quite popular around the globe ... for this to happen Texstar has had to put 150% of himself into this project ...

Tex asked people to understand the need for him to step away for a while and a few changes to be implemented to allow the Distro to carry on with his minimum input whilst he has a respite ...

skip to now ... the current Dev team are proceeding and carrying on delivering the quality Distro using the same guidelines as laid out by Tex ... you know "It's ready when it's ready" ... the Dev team is made up of people who work ... have families ... and have other commitments aswell as the Distro that you so love ...

so please have patience ... and stop belly aching ... PCLinuxOS is not a multi-billion $ Monopoly like Microshaft ... it also doesnt have a billionaire Pimp Daddy like Mark Shaftleworth ... theres not hundreds or thousands of Developers building it or maintaining it ... PCLinuxOS is a small group working as hard as they can to provide the best Distro available ...

i for 1 am trying to learn to build kernels ... it's new .... it also is taking alot of time to learn ... but i am sure i can just stop learning that and start on all your specific package suggests ... so please feel free to message any specific updates you want ... i will take the time to build them for you ...

I hope you can see now how this is the place to keep your finger on the pulse.

Too bad that for all these years, Texstar has been recognized as one very good packager (not to say one of the best), building a great distribution, one of the very first "working" rolling distributions, but he never really managed to agglomerate enough working forces on this project to allow him to take some steps back. The one time he tried to take a step back, the distribution almost died. It's clear that without him, the project is on sleep mode. And without him for too long, PCLinuxOS future is very dark.

I don't know about you, but I have FULL CONFIDENCE in those individuals (and the entire team) that he hand selected to help fill his shoes in his relative "absence" (for sake of a better word). I would hardly say that "the project is on sleep mode," given the recent efforts of Neal, Leiche, Sproggy, Archie and the rest of the development team.

With us working our butts off doing the job as we learned it from Tex, I can only say you have no clue what you are talking about. Insulting us does not help one damned bit.

Well said Neal. I have full confidence in the team, and look forward to using PCLinuxOS for many years to come.
