Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000 disconnect randomly

Dear All,

I am having Intel Centrino Wireless N 1000 on my laptop.
The connection signal strength is quite good, more than 50%.

Sometimes the connection died unexpectedly and quite difficult to get it back.
The kernel I'm using : 2.6.38.8-pclos3.pae.bfs, KDE desktop.

Is there any way how to keep this connection steady?

Checked the Synaptic, installed Centrino 1000 wireless driver version is 128.50.3.1-1pclos2010.
At this website : http://www.intellinuxwireless.org/?n=downloads&f=ucodes_1000, newest version of Centrino 1000 driver is available which released in 04-04-2011.
While version 128.50.3.1 released in 08-14-09.
Just compare the date only, I don't know whether newest driver will solve my problem or not.
If I use the newest driver from that website, I don't know how to install it and I am afraid it will break my system.
So I am hoping someone could figure out what to do.

when your connection dies, try to look at the end of /var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog for possible hints
about the cause ...

... and quite difficult to get it back.

Please expand, "quite difficult" or "never get back" ?
Eventually, what you have done to resume the connection ?
Your wireless router actually support the mode 802.11 N ?

What I meant with "quite difficult to get connection back" is I can get the connection back after 3 or 4 times clicks the CONNECT icon on the left bottom Network Center window. If the first try failed, then I try to connect it again until I have my connection.
That is what I usually do to resume my connection.

I don't have any idea whether the router support mode 802.11 N or not. Now I am staying in one small apartement room in Singapore. I am staying here sharing with the owner, not fully rent the whole apartement.The owner give me internet connection for free. And the router is in his room.

For your info, while I was writing this post, connection has died twice.

The overall look like some instability of your adapter ... I would try to disable the N functionality, therefore forcing your adapter to work on  802.11G:
can be done adding the following line in /etc/modprobe.conf

when done, reboot you system.

Another possibility could be something around adapter power management, we will see after this first trial

I you want to try new hardware, I would suggest to try first using an external USB wifi adapter ...

Have found a thread on the, with a similar issue, apparently solved by using power management "maximum performance" ...

Our current driver in repo is 128.50.3.1 which released in 08-14-09. The newest version is  39.31.5.1 released 4-4-2011.

Actually I have no idea how to solve the issue, other then investigate and by trials.

Reading around I have found all sort of things:

- a driver regression starting from kernel 2.6.35, solved in 3.0.x

- regression using an updated firmware where firmware /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-1000-5.ucode introduce some regression compared to /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-1000-3.ucode

these are also the reasons because I'm actually reluctant to change driver version, and I will leave it as final option.

- conflicts between iwlagn and hp_wmi module .... (and between acer_wmi, which doesn't apply to your system)...
we are going to try to blacklist the hp_wmi module, this may have other (unwanted) side effects

- poor performance when using some power management features ...
we are going to test this right now...

- a bug around the default_algo_rc, had experienced myself but was related to previous kernel 2.6.37.4...
not a problem to test this one too...

please try as follow, add the following line to /etc/modprobe.conf.

edit the file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist and add the following line:

At this point reboot, then proceed as follow:

cpufreq -g performace
cpufreq -c 0 -g performance
cpufreq -c 1 -g performance
cpufreq-info

the governor changes are not permanent, if you reboot you need to apply it again. The output of cpufreq-info should confirm that the governors has changed to "performance".


- Additionally, using a fixed data rate may help a bit ... try: (not a permanent change)
