If you (very regularly, like daily or weekly) upgrade through synaptic is there ever a reason to do a completely fresh install?

I thought I remember last year or maybe two years ago when a specific KDE version (I only use KDE) was released that a fresh install was necessary?

If you ever have to do a fresh release, is it possible to save all current settings so it's a seamless upgrade procedure and old setup is integrated into new (like wireless which is the only small issue I have ever had with this incredible distro)?

Thanks for the help.

If ever a new install becomes necessary, an announcement will be posted. Check PCLinuxOS General News and Announcements on a frequent basis.

If you keep your install updated regularly and the updates are for regular software then it is not necessary to reinstall  on new releases. Only if the basesystem and toolchain are upgraded then that's the time we'll need a reinstall.

If we ever have to reinstall, it is possible to save your current settings (except the obvious reinstallation of software that would be included in the reformat) provided that you keep your /home on a separate partition.

There are ways to circumvent a seemingly endless download and reinstallation of your installed apps. Keep the downloaded RPMS in the /var/cache/apt and save them.

Always make backups. A remaster or rsync to a removable HD may one day save you. Your OS, your hardware may break.

Peace and much respect,
Archie

Outdated information, and inaccurate. We've been updating the basesystem and the toolchain dynamically, just like the rest of the system, since 2009. The only reason we did a complete reinstall for the 2010 release was to avoid approximately 6 months of intermediate upgrades, to maintain proper upgrade paths, to get to where we ultimately wanted the system to be. It was a time saving measure, to upgrade the entire repo in one step.

As with the recent aptupgrade, we may ask users to do the basesystem/toolchain rolling upgrade as a separate process from a regular upgrade to be sure these critical parts upgrade smoothly, as a unit, before continuing with regular upgrades of the rest of the system. This may not actually be necessary, but will minimize the chance of errors due to the varying nature of individual installations.

Gnome should be to version 4 by 2910.

You have to be careful with time travel or you end up as your own grandfather.  Just ask Zaphod.
