We have been having a warmer winter than normal.  So spring-thinking got into my head.

In spring and summer, we get thunderstorms.  These storms have a habit of flickering off the power for a second.  Sometimes for a number of minutes.

So I bought http://www.apc.com/products/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=BX1300G&tab=documentation which should keep me safe in any future storm.

An once of prevention is worth a pound of cure....

My son who rents the basement from me, bought one of these about half a year ago.  He is a big-time gamer.

Well... I download/torrent quite a bit.  I don't want a corrupted file.  So this ups-box is just one more guarantee that things remain good, right?  Bought it at for Costco...129.95.

I bought an UPS a couple of months ago, is a good investment. I don't know how I did live without one all this years.

nice, ups is a must have at most places on the world

most people can survive with a smaller unit, 600w unit but this one is nice and has lots of ports

does it work in linux, the usb port?

WELL................

I've had my share of luck... the bad kind.

Friday morning my Astro van went into Reuben's Garage http://www.weblocal.ca/rubens-auto-repair-saskatoon-sk.html

The tune-up costed me 575.00.  (ok, on jan-31-2012 I got a cheque for 7,960.00).  That was Friday.  Saturday morning about 10:00am... I was driving off a parking lot.  The front driver's side just dropped.  I Called my buddy, Pete Freisen, an independent tow-truck guy.  Got the van towed to... (yup to guessed it) to Reuben's Garage).

Lower ball-joint came apart.  Reuben called me Monday morning around 10:00am.  Money is for spending, right?  OK... two ball joints, two idler-arms, wheel-alignment..746.00.

The cost of living in a first-world country.

A good place to price car parts is www.rockauto.com add in the shipping then multiply that total by 3 (for a parts + labor guesstimate) and see how it compares to Reuben's price.

I only use my UPS for the cable modem & router since laptops are in use most of the time.
The UPS batteries are their weak spot, when the bat's kick the bucket find some nice big AGM external batteries and wire them up, I've had an 18AH Powersonic battery externally tethered to my UPS for years.

Looks like it's a 12 volt 7 amp/hr battery in your UPS.
That's not going to provide 780 watts for very long.
Something on the order of a 30 amp hour battery would be more like it.  Grin

It is what it is. Still better than the old Maruson UPS 600, that I had.  Which is seemingly better, since it is off the electrical breaker that it was on (I have an old house).  I am considering using it in the living room.  Where I have my stereo and tv.
