Posted by Michael Larabel on February 04, 2012 (phoronix)

It's been brought up in the (phoronix) forums about the state of upstream Compiz developments. Some Phoronix readers go as far as calling upstream Compiz being dead. Those comments were largely based upon outstanding Compiz bugs, the lack of Compiz releases, and the lead developer apologizing for the "failure" of the Compiz project on his blog. In his blog posting from December, Sam Spilsbury apologized for the lack of new direction, lack of development, and not any increased stability for the project.

........... The main "customer" of Compiz is really just left to another distro with their Unity desktop, as the GNOME 3.x Shell is set with its Mutter compositing window manager and the KDE4 desktop is being quite pleasant for most users with KWin.

In terms of the Compiz code itself, the Compiz code-base itself on Launchpad.net is still being actively developed. The last commit to the Compiz Bazaar repository happened just days ago, but it's still far from hitting the Compiz 1.0 release.

Yeah - some major distro is certainly giving it "the boot".

Regardless of the eventual outcome, no one can deny that Compiz/Beryl blazed a new trail for the Linux desktop. They can't lose that.

+1 / to give credit, where credit is due.

Have a wonderful morning!  Smiley

By Jack Wallen - February 6, 2012, (techrepublic)

RIP Compiz

This is not 100% confirmed, but the news that Fedora is dropping Compiz from release 17 can only mean one thing — Compiz is dead. Gentoo, openSUSE, GNOME, and a list of others had already dropped Compiz, leaving only one distribution holding onto the compositing software — another distro. That’s right, the little desktop that could still uses Compiz as its compositor. There are also plenty of outstanding bug reports whose issues, it seems, will forever be unresolved. This all clangs out a death knell for the compositor that really brought something to the Linux desktop that no other had.

And, no matter how other feel about this, I am going to miss Compiz.  (+1)

................

So, I believe it is safe to bid Compiz, as we’ve known and loved it, a fond farewell. You were an amazing piece of desktop software that did more for the Linux movement than many will stop to give you credit for. And I would hope that all open source and Linux fans will take a moment and offer up some appreciation to the developers that worked hard on a project that was about as unique a project as any on the landscape.

I'll agree with that.  I certainly gave Linux that bit of a wow factor to the unwashed.  I know KDE does the cube thing etc - but is there anything which could remotely step up?

Longtom, I would give my ring finger "nail" to shake hands with you my friend.

But only in honesty and for real.

If a "virtual" handshake is at stake, I'd just as well assume that we are friends and forgo the graphics.  Wink Grin Grin
