gnome-recorder, records most mediums for me, but not from the Hydrogen Drum Machine. This is actually what I need most. Bummer!  I installed hydrogen here to see what might be the matter ...... and the answer is nothing. It records perfectly in gnome-recorder. Of course I am using Pulse Audio and in particular pavucontrol to ensure that gnome-recorder is attaching to the correct sound stream ..... in this case a monitor of the internal audio. Also I have Hydrogen set to use Alsa ... not Jack etc |

I guess it is obvious from previous posts of mine, particularly in this thread, that I consider Pulse Audio as close to a necessity, when wishing to have user level easy access to audio streams.
Without it, as I recall from a few years ago, it is a huge hassle to arrange access to the streams for recording and other purposes.
Generally things appear to work this way ........ you can record easily from a Source ..... the source of a sound stream ..... but when it comes to recording from a sound sink --- such as the sound going to speakers etc you must record from a "monitor" of that sound stream and need not be concerned about the source of the stream.
That is really where PA makes it simple, as it provides those 'monitor' selections in the GUI, to record from. So although the recording app may not itself be capable of 'seeing' the sound sink and its stream, PA will allow the user to link it to the monitor of that stream.

Ok, I don't why but now I get static when I record. It also picks up my voice if I talk, even though I muted the mic. How do I fix this?

Like I said, I muted it so it shouldn't be active. If there's a mic setting somewhere else that's doing this, I don't know where it is. Obviously if you voice is being picked up then a MIC is active ......

As I mentioned in my original post, I want to record the audio from youtube in stereo, but it seems my system won't allow it. I muted the mic in kmix, hoping to use only the internal mic, but that's not what's happening since it's still picking up external sound. I have no idea what apps you are using, recording from where, where you muted the MIC, whether you may have a second MIC in some other device or even if you are using pavucontrol or not.
So, I could not even hazzard a guess ...... except to say that obviously a MIC is not muted.
