Hi-
I bought a USB Video Capture dongle-type device hoping to transfer some analog audio & video into my Linux machine. I'm having no luck getting Linux to work with it. I've browsed the repository and didn't find anything that looked like it may assist me. Any way to get this happening? I do see the USB device being noticed in USBView but that's all.
Thanks for all your insight!!!

vlc can open and capture form v4l ports like this one

if i remember correctly avidemux can do that too(maybe i'm confusing names with another video editor)

it depends on the device and if the kernel has a module loaded for it

open pclinux control center/hardware and verify if it has a module loaded

Ok. The video capture device (in the Control Center) lists the module as 'unknown' which I assume means it's not loaded in the kernel as of yet. Any thoughts on how best to pursue this?
Thanks,

if it is a usb device you can use the command lsusb in konsole to see more info, also tell us the name of the device to investigate more

PCLinuxOS 2011 2 - KDE4

« Reply #4 on: February 01, 2012, 09:24:53 PM »

It may not work as the default do to format - you may need to go into the special or custom settings box in the capture menu on vlc as you are connecting it to the device and select card 1 as many usb capture devise are composite input un like a usb webcam.  I am in the wrong box this morning so if you have not found that box on vlc I ll put up the clicks I used later.

This is not an issue with vlc in windows as it switches input automatically the linux version for some reason is dumber and if you use it in a vm it will freeze every 10 minutes so run it native on a host only.

These are two issue that drove me completely nuts for weeks and the reason just plugging into my Virtual box windows didn't solve the issue.   but it will work.

Hi-
Here's the usb device I found on the lsusb command (the list is obviously longer but this is the device).

Bus 001 Device 003: ID 1f4d:0102 G-Tek Electronics Group

VLC has yet to see the device as yet- it see's my webcam but that's it. I recall in VLC that I was able to select
which input I wanted to use but can't find that option now (that was some month's ago).
Thanks Everybody!!!

PCLinuxOS 2011 2 - KDE4

« Reply #6 on: February 02, 2012, 06:13:28 AM »

I had not used it in a few weeks so had to wait to get home to see what setting I used was called.  Using vlc I would select the a open capture device - advanced options and click the input from 0 to 1 the one means the input is a composite device.  At any rate I had that working which did not resolve my problem with motion program.  The v4l2 routes the id of the hardware wrong for my eb1a:2820 eMPIA Technology, Inc. and sees it as a 2860 - but that seemed to be ok if I pointed it at what is called card one in v4l2 which is what the advanced option did without modprobe.  I used that modprobe instructions for this issue in the past to fix this issue but without a positive result.

Now here is the worse news.  This stuff no longer works ether. Huh  I just fired up my capture card and get nothing - ether I have forgotten a step in those few weeks or something changed. Tongue  The card and connection are good I just used it in windows again PnP by re booting into Xp.  I hate when this happens.

I cannot find any mention of support for that device in Linux under the name given.

To try to get more info about the device please do the following

Unplug the unit
open a terminal and enter the command
dmesg
Take note of the last few lines displayed
Plug the device in
Do
dmesg
and copy and paste the all new lines in the output to your next post.

I think you may be out of luck with that device.
Geniatech only supply drivers for MAC and Windows for the iGrabber from what I have found (if that is the device Huh  .....  in fact I can only see a few Linux drivers ....  all for tuners)
