they are astounding.  like sand sculptures, it never ceases to amaze me how much effort artists are willing to expend on something so transient.

edit:

love this quote from the blurb:

"The organizers then widdle the group down to the best 15 options"

i think the author meant 'whittle' as a widdle is something involving water.

Maybe they wait for the widdle to freeze and then incorporate it into the sculptures. Grin

I saw on a PBS show once that there is someplace(escapes me at the moment), that builds a hotel out of ice and they are packed every year. They showed the rooms with beds in them and lights and it was very strange that people would flock to that, but they did.

Great, I can barely make a snowman. Now I have to compete with this?

I hated it when they destroyed pumpkin carving too. LOL

This stuff is beautiful.  Grin Grin

Although the Jukkasjärvi ice hotel in Sweden is the oldest one (if "oldest" is the right term considering that it's rebuilt every year) there are also ice hotels in Norway:

Finland:

and Canada:

(Note the blazing fire in the Norwegian one. At least in Norway the sauna is in a separate building not made of ice....)
