There is none.

It depends on your requirements and the use of the result.

For instance I NEVER want to change the encoding when I am ripping.

Search the repository for DVD and see what is there .....  DVDRip; K9copy amongst others.

That is true.

If you are, however, looking to re-encode the video, and (output) filesize is a concern, consider looking at HandBrake, as well.

DVDrip provides the best quality for the size and has an excellent auto clip and resize facility.

Trust me I have archived my collection of 300 dvd's!!!! and wrote an article in PCLOS magazine.

Now there is a problem with Disney DVD's that I have subsequently solved for most of them but unfortunately I have about 3/4 of a bottle of red wine in me so I don't trust my instructions  Smiley

Although I know this in my sleep : Basic DVDrip
1. rip
2. select HQ crop+resize
3. Find the starting frame of the dvd from the crop+resize screen
4. in the transcode screen enter the starting frame, the main reason is that the clipping of the crap at the start ensures the sound is synched.
5. Select 0.2 bpp + aC3 pass through on the sound
6 Transcode and have a beer!!!!!!!!!!!!

For me it is k9 copy. It is simple to use and has ripped any dvd I have thrown at it. It is one of my required programs.

There is a howto for dvdrip on the forum in the tips and tricks section. I used it and it worked great BUT sometimes I had to use k9copy on a dvd to get rid of the protection and burn it to a new dvd before I could use dvdrip.

Of course we are talking about backing up our own DVDs not piracy. Piracy is illegal and just wrong on many levels.

Regards.

Those DVDs for which you wish to make a personal backup copy, that have track breaks in them to prevent such, you can use vobcopy with an offset to rip the main title to a vob file, from which you can create a DVD using one of the many programmes in the repo for the purpose. I like DVDStyler, but there are lots of others.

That of course is on the assumption that your local laws allow such personal backups.  Wink
