I like the freshly dead kind my self. From a can is still better than none at all though, YMMV Grin

Maybe they go straight into the can while alive?

It must mean that they are freshly processed before being canned.  Grin

I must update this thread for one reason.

It has to do with my OP.

I posted this recipe before I ever had clams out of a can.

I have since sampled "Caned Clams".

If you ever, intentionally or by some accident, purchased or stumbled upon, was handed out or stolen or in any other way found yourself in possession of anything vaguely resembling "Caned Clams", dispose of the entire thing immediately.

You have made a "major" mistake that I must point out.

Nothing compares to the taste of fresh clams.

If you can't find fresh, live clams. I would suggest forgetting this recipe.  Wink Grin

Of course they use "fresh clams." Ya don't think they'd advertise using old, stale clams now, do ya?  Grin

Clams on the half-shell with a drop of hot sauce.  Not THAT is the way to eat clams.  Of course they are still alive when you eat them that way!   Shocked  I grew up on Long Island New York.  I have fond memories of skipping class....errr.....doing some studying in a quiet sandy location....after wading waist deep in the water and digging some clams to shuck and enjoy with the cold beer we bought on the way there.  Ahh the days before pollution.  Oh yeah, and I had some great New England clam chowder in Seattle last week too.  Not much of that here at home in Kentucky.
