I realize that PASS is being moved, so no problem there.

For the time being, I moved over to heanet.  I did an update.  Well, an update for the Metapackage for the Xfce desktop environment came through. It did not  automatically select and update with the other updates.  I had to manually select it.  Upon doing so, it said that it wanted to uninstall the entire DE (or at least a whole lot of it).

Will a new one be installed in its place?

Well, upon selection and going forward, a message says that there are unresolved dependencies.  So, something else going on or perhaps not fully synced yet?

heya Mark ...

is this xfce 4.6 or xfce 4.8?Huh ... is it a xfce added to KDE or the Phoenix/Phinx iso install ... Huh if it is a xfce 4.8 install then can you make sure you have xfce4 added to the sections of your heanet epo Cheesy

Kori Cheesy

Kori,

I'm so sorry.  I should have provided this info.  My apologies.

Okay, installed version on my system is task-xfce 4.6.1-4 pclos2010 upgrading to 4.9.0-1 pclos2012.

I'm gonna hit it one more time and see what it reports.

Okay, getting the same report....unresolved dependencies.

hey Mark ...

yeah there was a bit of a mixup with the repo's the other day and the 4.9 updates got sent to the wrong repo section ... your gonna have to remove the xfce components manually through Synaptic ... this include Thunar and other xfce apps ...

then once that is done you need to install task-xfce again and task-xfce plugins .... and also the thunar pacakages ... this will restore your xfce 4.6 desktop ...

the migrations scripts from 4.6 to 4.8 were not as successfull as hoped because of the moving to newer dependency chain and apps ... if you want the xfce 4.9 desktop ... it is best to install the latest Phoenix or Phinx iso's ...

if you do migrate ... please add the xfce4 section to your selected repositories sections ... the migration script for settings will ask if you want to migrate your old setting ... or create new .... some people have success with the migrations others have reported failure ... if it fails then you will just need to recreate you panel settings by adding the items you require ...

please only install the libgarcon packages or you will lose your current menu ... add all the thunar packages Cheesy

which ever way you go dude i am here to help on the other end of your decision Cheesy

Kori Cheesy

Ok, thanks so much for this answer.Smiley  Let me see if I understand.... but I'll give you some more background.

I run KDE as my primary desktop.  I only have XFCE as an alternate DE.   I did no upgrades to at all.  I did not install this update because  it won't update.

So, what you're saying is, uninstall my current XFCE DE and then go back and install this new update?

absolutely Mark Wink ... but make sure you add the xfce4 section to your repo Cheesy and when you boot to it select to keep current configuration :d

Okay, now I jut noticed something.  In the upgrade, the package is listed in size as zero.  So, there's nothing there.  How does uninstalling completely help me if there is nothing to re-install?

Maybe just leave well enough alone?  I mean, it's not my primary desktop.  If worse comes to worse, I can simply uninstall.   I do have LXDE in place and Gnome, too.Smiley

Mark,
All meta-packages are content zero. This is because they are not regular RPM packages. They are a set of instructions that tells synaptic what packages to install to achieve the task they were built for.

Okay, what'd I miss?  I decided to do the removal and upgrade on my laptop and the task-xfce is no longer listed.  (The plugins are still there.)

So, is something being retooled?

Now, I'll go check the announcements area.Smiley

Mark,
You should do a reload in Synaptic. The package task-xfce was updated today. Plus read this ---

Thanks, Neal.  I'll check Synaptic today.

I read the other thread.  You wrote, "Install this RPM to update your sources list for Synaptic Package Manager."

Umm...I don't see a link or any reference to any RPM.  Am I overlooking something?

Look for the package apt-sources-list and install it, Mark.
Be sure to make a back-up copy of your PASS credentials.

Bringing this over, so as not to derail the mirror thread:

added section xfce4 to all mirrors, so you can now use task-xfce in Synaptic to install Sproggy's XFCE4  Wink

Just tried "task-xfce", and got this message:

task-xfce:
Depends: libexo  but it is not installable

And I'd done the mirror update

Neal,

Okay, I'm sitting her ewith a big red face, slapping my forehead!  Doh!

You meant for me to open synaptic, reload, and search for "apt-sources-list."

I did and the package came right up.Smiley

Okay, now that I'm here, here's my question: I don't believe I acquired this the same way last time.  I recall downloading a text file and manually editing my sources.list in root.  Why the different method?  Or am I mis-remembering incorrectly?Smiley

Also, after instlaling the package, the follwoing message came up:

Quote
While installing package apt-sources-list-1.0.1-1pclos2012:

warning: /etc/apt/sources.list saved as /etc/apt/sources.list.rpmsave

So, now do I have to do a manual edit to sources.list?  or is this merely a backup?

EDIT -- WAIT WAIT WAIT!  Again, dummy me!  I can see my PASS account has been removed and i have to edit this manually.  so, it's a new sources.list and the other is the backup.

Apologies.

Okay, I upated my sources.list.  I then closed out of Synapic, reopened, reloaded and got long list of updates for XFCE.I went forward and applied al.

I received an error regarding Thunar.

Well, I rebooted the system, went back into Synaptic and now see I have three broken packages.

Thunar
Thunar-shres-plugin
Thunar-volman

In additon, at one point, I got this error message:

Quote
While installing package thunar-1.3.0-1pclos2012:

error: unpacking of archive failed on file /usr/share/doc/Thunar/html/da/images: cpio: rename failed - Is a directory
thunar-shares-plugin-0.2.1-2pclos2012
thunar-volman-0.6.0-1pclos2012

I attempted a reinstall of the broken packages. Still reported as being broken
