OBJECTS IN MIRROR... ARE LOSING

« on: January 22, 2012, 12:26:21 PM »

A friend of my son erased the boot folder  Cheesy   Cheesy   Cheesy  from his netbook install and he doesn't want to talk about it  Grin   Grin   Grin

Is there a way to recover it? or I just should reinstall (that's what I think to do but I'm hoping to learn something from this)

Boot from live system and as root recreate /boot from /union/boot (live = /union) by copy and paste. Then run restore / redo MBR.
Best of luck to you, Crow.

edit: maybe wait to see if someone posts a better way.

Thank you both, I'm eager now waiting the netbook.

The copy and paste of the folder seems a great option.

I will report when things are done

If the LiveUSB stick was created with LiveUSB Creator then you could copy the /boot directory directly from the stick partition, and that will have all the files needed, including a menu.lst file which would need editing.

You could try running the RedoMBR app again after that.
In truth I have never run the RedoMBR like that .....  always found it easier to edit by hand.

Check permissions of files just in case ......

You may need to run blkid on the HDD to get the unique identifier number (UUID) for /. For the wording/structure of menu.list, look at your own box for an example. At least, that is what I'd do.

edit: /etc/fstab will show the UUID for all drives/partitions.

Redo MBR works like a charm every time I use it ( that's once a week.....don't ask! thanks )

Depending on what you have on the computer, a Boot Manager ( Gag or Burg ) may help
