Hi.  I recently installed the update notifier while the pass repository was selected in Synaptic.  It checked for updates and found none.

I subsequently discovered that the list of repositories had changed and installed the new list as sources.list (adding pass to it).  I did the speed test and consequently selected the five fastest (plus pass).  Once again, no problem with the update notifier except that no updates were found.

I then learnt that pass is not functional at present, changed the repository used by Synaptic and re-loaded.  Several upgrades were reported and I upgraded all.

Afterwards, the notifier was unable to connect to the selected repository.  I opened Synaptic and changed to the next repository on the list.  I did NOT, however, re-load.  Once again the notifier reported that it was unable to connect to the repository.

I would like to know what the problem is, how I can fix it and how to stop the notifier from working (apart from removing it) until the problem is fixed.

I am aware of that post, thank you.  The problem is NOT with the pass repository.  The problem is that the update notifier cannot connect with the repository which I am now using instead of pass.

Try a different mirror.

The mirror I am using is performing fine.  It is the update notifier which has the problem.  I did try another mirror with the same result.

I have removed the application.  I'll delete the folders it created in my user folder and reinstall.  That may work; I'll report back.

No, that didn't work.  I'll mark the issue WONTFIX.

How did you set it up? Daily checks? Hourly checks?

May I ask if update notifier has been restarted after changing repo ?

@Neal: I set it up for daily checks but it was checking each time I logged in.  There was no connection problem when I had pass selected in Synaptic.  The problem occurred with two other repositories selected in Synaptic (not selected simultaneously of course).

@as Yes, the update notifier was restarted after changing the repo each time.  The error occurred several times before I gave up.

Synaptic has been able to connect to the present repo from two PCLinuxOS installations, download package lists and install 'upgrades'.  As I mentioned originally, I did not reload after the second change of repo.  Perhaps I need to do that?

There is your problem. You must reload, when you change repos. Always. Whether you use update-notifier or not, if you change repos, you must reload.

Now I cannot load anything from the repositories I enable in Synaptic, including the repo I was using earlier today.

OK, got over that problem by running a new speed test and enabling a different repository which I have now loaded in Synaptic.

I had no problem (other than pass not updating) before installing the update notifier so I think I'll forget about the notifier.

Thanks for the replies.

You probably should run bleachbit and bleachbit-root.

Thanks.  I run both at the end of each day.  Are you saying to run Bleachbit * 2 after the update notifier runs?
