This should be a quick solved.  It´s a simple process, I just can´t remember or find it.

Today I installed and updated Zen Minime 2011, running Gnome 2.3 on my Acer Aspire 110 netbook. I´ve been wrestling with it all day and only did a quick forum search for ¨Automount USB.¨

When I plug in a USB drive, it appears in my Computer window alongside File System. I can right-click and mount the USB drive from there.

How do I make it mount the USB drive, put its icon on the desktop and open the folder automatically?  I want this to happen every time I insert any new thumbdrive or USB disc drive.

EDIT: I apologize for triple-posting. I hit submit and the page froze up. I refreshed and hit submit again for a second page freeze. Second refresh + third Submit = three unintentional posts.

SOLVED:  http://www.monperrus.net/martin/automounting+usb+flash+drives+on+linux+with+udev+and+pmount

SECOND EDIT
The above solution only works for mounting the drive. When I go to unmount it, the error message says the device was probably mounted manually from command line and therefore HAL can't unmount it.

I removed the automount rules folder which the above link suggested. I used gconf-editor to adjust automount preferences but still have the problem of not being able to unmount usb drives.

I'm going to bed, fifteen hours wrestling with this is killing me.

In Nautilus try Edit > Preferences > Media. Check box for  Browse media when inserted.

If that doesn't work take a look at some of the options in Gconf-Editor > apps > nautilus > preferences.

Knome:

THANK you. I knew it was one little thing. I had Browse Media checked in Nautilus and in gconf-editor I had automount-open checked but no automount. Now they're all checked and it works great.
