I have KDE FM and it comes with a lot of applications for video. Can any one recommend or suggest one for me. I would like to to take a newscast that I have downloaded as an MP4 file, capture about 15 minutes of the one hour and create a separate file with that 15 minutes. It's DemocracyNow and they encourage sharing so there is no legal issue here. Any suggestions?
Thanks

I use kdenlive extensively. You can also try Openshot, which is more or less like MovieMaker from Windows.

Chippermon,
Avidemux is also quite capable of doing what you are wanting to do.

+1 on Avidemux. It's always done everything I need so I have never tried kdenlive. I would suggest checking them both out and then giving us your feedback. (see what I did there? LOL)

I have always used Openshot, as you can call inkscape and blender with it, to make 3D titles etc. Has always been very reliable for me.

Another vote here for kdenlive, it is surprisingly powerful and yet simple to use, it also handles most of the newer video formats very well. I have often used kdenlive over the past 6 months or so, in fact this program was one of the reason I switched distro's (after staying with the last one since 2006) and chose Full Monty as my main system because it has such a complete set of tools pre-installed and ready to run. My previous distro had continual conflicts when running and installing most of it's video editing programs, most of them either completely failed to run, or crashed after hours of editing. Prior to switching to PCLinuxOS FM I found that the only decent video editor that was stable and ran well enough to be useful was Avidemux, this is a very capable program.
Three other programs that often get used in my video editing toolset are Handbrake for simple conversions, mkvmerge GUI for stitching video clips together and DVBcut for quickly and easily cutting unwanted content from Digital TV video (.ts) streams. How things have changed over the past couple of years, we are so lucky to now have such a useful and capable selection of video editing programs in linux, there is no longer any need to resort to booting into the dark side for this...

+1, although I have not tried kdenlive yet, either. Openshot is just too easy for me to be curious enough, I guess.

Looks like I'll be giving Openshot another try on my next video editing project

This seems like the right place to ask this question :
What app is available to
record a personal video from webcam, using the webcam MIC, and which allows editing of the resultant video.
I have looked at
Openshot Lives Kdenlive (nearly, but not quite)
and none will apparently do what I want.
Any further suggestions?

I just did a capture with kdenlive and cheese, use a Logitech Pro 9000. What is the make/model of the webcam you're using?

What is the make/model of the webcam you're using? What did you use Cheese for? Pre-record the video, save to a file and then import it into Kdenlive? Kdenlive is supposed to be able to record from the webcam ...... which it will do ..... but won't record the sound from the webcam MIC. Also it plays back the video at what appears to be 2x speed. I am looking for an app that will record both video and sound and then allow me to edit it. Webcam is working fine ID 04f2:a147 Chicony Electronics Co., Ltd regards.

ElCuervo - With OpenShot, how did you get the Help files running? Yes - I have its "docs" package installed - and have tried starting it from terminal.
Looks as if it'd be a quick and handy device - with a few instructions...
Regards, Dave.
