Hi there - since this morning every time I try to open ktorrent I get a crash report  Cry  If I try to restart it I just get another crash report - I've restarted the computer but that didn't help, I've opened synaptic, clicked reload and mark all upgrades, but I'm already fully up-to-date, and I've tried reinstalling ktorrent but alas without joy.

The crash report states that it is a: Segmentation fault (11) and the developer information tab lists the following debug info (although it also says that this is "probably not useful"  Cheesy ):
Code:
Application: KTorrent (ktorrent), signal: Segmentation fault

Can't duplicate - working fine here pickl

Do you have another user account you can log into and see whether it causes the same behaviour.

Could also try moving your ktorrent folder to somewhere safe and then try opening ktorrent again - you should find it in:

/home/your-name/.kde4/share/apps/ktorrent/

Thanks for the reply menotu - I tried creating a new user account and running it from there, no joy, ditto when I tried moving the folder - a new one was created after I attempted to run ktorrent; I've now removed the new folder and moved the original back so the system is back as it was.

I'm certainly puzzled - it was working fine yesterday but today, no dice  Huh

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion  Smiley

When you reinstalled ktorrent did you also install libktorrent - if not mebbe give that a whirl; apart from that I'm out of ideas I'm afraid.

Could try another torrent client from the repos 'til a fix for ktorrent comes along

No, I didn't - sadly I just gave that a try but still no luck  Cry

I guess another client is the only option for now - but I have two (two-part) questions:

when reinstalling I used the "reinstall" option in synaptic - is there anything to be gained from removing ktorrent and libktorrent, then installing them again?  And if I do that, if I copied the ktorrent folder from ~/.kde4/share/apps/ktorrent/ to somewhere safe and then replaced it after the removal/ installation, would I keep the info on what torrents were in progress etc.?

has ktorrent been updated recently? (I'm pretty good for keeping the system updated but was away over the holidays and didn't look through the list of upgrades when I got back - just hit apply.) If so, is there a way for me to go back to an earlier version and see if that works?

Thanks for all your help!

You should be able to move things back and pick up from you left off, but,  it could be a bit iffy in your case as when I did a very quick web search it seemed that the occasional torrent can cause corruption and give ktorrent problems (similar to what you have) and when those torrent downloads have been stopped/removed out of the equation things work again.

I'm pretty sure you can't use Synaptic to go back to an earlier version of ktorrent (sometimes that's possible with video drivers) but not "regular" apps.

If you decide to install something else I would leave both ktorrent and libktorrent installed as they don't take up much HD space and shouldn't interfere the new client (can always uninstall them once the new client has been running okay for a while)

You could run Bleach Bit and clean out your tmp and cache files in case there is any debris lurking around from the torrents

Yes, I had a problem with a corrupt torrent a while back, had to remove it from the ktorrent folder to fix...

So, I've run bleachbit, backed up the ktorrent folder, used synaptic to completely remove ktorrent and libktorrent, then installed them both back and tried to run ktorrent (without restoring the backed up folder) and things are just the same - so I guess it's not an issue with a particular torrent.

I will leave them installed and leave the backup folder where it is in case an update makes ktorrent come back to life - thanks very much for trying to help menotu!  Smiley

If you want to try another torrent client while waiting for ktorrent to work, try qbittorrent. It's in the repos & very nice. I switched from ktorrent last year & never went back.  Grin

Thanks for the tip - I've installed qbittorrent but it's reporting some sort of connection issue, which seems odd as I'm using the same port I used with ktorrent  Huh

I'm starting to wonder whether I'd be as well to wipe the system and reinstall...

What do you mean by "some sort of connection issue"
What action causes that message?
More specifics will help.  Wink
