My problem is no audio when playing a DVD or video input in my user account. I
have sound for notifications and in browser (e.g. YouTube and streaming).
However, everything works fine in root. When I try to set the sound
configuration in root, I see one output device listed, HDA Intel (VT1708S
Analog). When I list the sound configuration in my user account, the HDA Intel
device is listed twice, but one is grayed out. I have run alsaconf, but nothing
changes. I have a homebuilt with a ASUS m/b and onboard Intel audio. Mixer shows inputs & volumes OK and master input set to PCM.

I do not see anything obviously different between the root and user audio
configurations. Is there a way to remove the phantom second HDA Intel device?
Is more info needed to zero in on the fix? I've done lots of searching, but nothing has helped.

If using KDE then through Configure your Desktop - Hardware - Multimedia - Phonon test the sound on the entries and if one works put that to the top for each Device Preference.

Thank you, Yes, I've done that, and the device in dark print is at the top of the list, and I get the lovely melody sound from testing all Audio Output options. But when I play a DVD, I see the video fine, but no sound. When I do the exact same as root, all works fine.

Just to be sure ......  did you check the sounds for all the Device Preference entries?

Do you use Pulse Audio ?

I am having same or similar problem.   From Firefox, I can log into a youtube video but I cannot get any sound.  (The normal brief sound plays when I first boot up.)

If I sign in as "/" then the sound works normally from within Firefox.

What happened?    I have killed all sound applications and ran alsaconf a couple of times but no changes.
