HOW TO MyLiveCD Full Monthy ? Solved.

I am  now trying to run MyLiveCd on Full monty. I installed Draklive. I got rid of videos, movies,  music to make it as small as out of /home. It kicks off OK then it gets to "Creating compressed image:                         [  3.75% 00:01:56/01:13:28]
Nd there it just hangs, goes no further. Where will i find the partially created images as this is the third try and should probably delete them before trying again. I have a dual layer dvd in there ready for the burn, if i ever get to that stage!, or am i doing some thing wrong. Thanks all,

Hi Wayne,

mylivecd is a script which allows to build a liveCD of a system not larger than ~11GB because the resulting iso-image can not be larger than 4.0GB. The FullMonty-master system I use to build the FullMonty-iso image is ~ 13GB and I need to apply quite some tricks to have mylivecd working on such a big system. If you want to backup your FullMonty installation you can
a) remove some applications you don't need in order to get down to ~11GB, make sure there is at least 20GB free disk space, and then run mylivecd
b) backup your personal documents, then install and update the latest FullMonty-iso image, and restore your documents

Hi Pinoc. Thanks for a great desktop environment / layout mate, a real credit to ya. I have used Acronis Home Image 12 to backup/image / and/home. Then others came into the topic and were talking about getting mylivecd on a dual layer dvd so thought i would try it. It's not essential as i will run Acronis every couple of weeks. So i wont bother with it as i don't want to remove any apps and Acronis 2012 does a good job of it. I do it via windows but it can be done with just the iso of Acronis True Image 2012 using it from boot. Thanks again mate for a great job. What to do with this post ? Solved or should i remove it ? By the way where will i find the partially created mylivcd image files too get rid off them ? Cheers, Wayne.

Hi Wayne,

great to hear you like the FullMonty. 
If Acronis does a good job then stay with this option. There is no point to use a dual-layer DVD because the iso-image created by mylivecd can never be larger than 4.0GB, so a normal DVD is sufficient. The partial files from mylivecd can be found under /tmp/.

There is a way to create and use a liveUSB (not CD/DVD) that is greater than the ~4GB limit.
That limit applies to the creation of the ISO file. Actually it is a limit on any individual file size within the ISO.

If the mylivecd is run with the option --noclean or --workdir, which ensures that the files used do not get deleted automatically, on a large install, then it will create the required files successfully and fail to produce an ISO.

The difference is those files (livecd.sqfs file and isolinux directory) remain available, not deleted when ISO creation fails, and they can be used by the liveUSB creator script, to produce a LiveUSB which can be very large indeed.

Personally I think it would be a very good idea to have the generation of the ISO a selectable option in mylivecd ........  just like it is in most video apps, which give the option to produce an ISO or a set of video files in directories.

In that case the required files could be produced by mylivecd without the limit of the ISO being imposed, and the files could then be used for a LiveUSB or a LiveHDD install.

In any case, for completeness, I wanted to point out the above.

So yes it is possible to produce a Live media from a large install. One just has to select the correct means to do it.
