Hi Patrick;
The first step I would try is to disable compositing.
Settings Manager -> Windows Manager Tweaks -> Compositor -> uncheck "Enable display compositing"
See if that fixes the issue. I noticed your CPU is spiked from the applet.

Are you using the Nvidia driver? If so, check the applet under system configuration to make sure it is working properly.
Also, at 1680x1050 can you check and see in your BIOS how much RAM you have allocated your video card? It looks like you are using onboard video.

OK, so you are not using onboard video, and that card should be more than powerful enough to handle the resolution.... You need to run the command line applet to fix your resolution (fixes video card problems as well). I'll have to look it up, as I cannot remember the name. Your machine, with a 22" monitor, should not be running at 1024x600 - that's a netbook size screen.

patrick - try creating a new user, then logging into xfce with that user. See if the problem replicates itself. This is definitely a strange one.

the cpu><graphic is not the problem, Thunar and claws would try to search on locale networks for shares and this will take a little time, on lxde is it not enabled, or the thunar-shares-plugin not installed ?
This 3 seconds should be normal, and if you not use shares/home-networks or so, you be free to remove the plugin with apt-get/ SoftwareCenter or Synaptic.
regards
