For whatever reason (currently unknown) I managed to hose up my laptop so it wouldn't boot up - would hang on the X-org stuff, with all sorts of missing files and folders.
OK - that's the problem, now the solution:
I threw my 2011.06 CD in the drive, booted up, choose existing partitions, only format the / partition, leaving /home alone. 5 minutes later remove CD and restart, start Synaptic, full update. Run LOManager, install Foxit and Scribus - and voila!
Total time maybe 30 minutes - or less, and everything back just like it was! Well, as far as I know at the moment - may have to reinstall a few other things when I need them, but it only takes a few seconds for each one.
Now, why did I mention Windows? Well, because I'd still be waiting for the initial install, for one thing, then update, reboot, update, reboot... repeat for hours. Them reinstall all sorts of software, rebooting after each... I might get done sometime next week!
Tex and crew have created something fabulous here!
The original problem? I'm blaming it on grand kids... No matter how many times you tell a 5 year old "Don't touch unless I'm here!" they just will...

I've noticed that. Strange. When I was five I took everything apart unless I was clearly told not to, but if expressly asked not to touch something I regretfully abstained. What's the world coming to?

I just booted Win 7 on a laptop ....... and got the message on screen ...... do not shut down your computer installing update 126 of 14,606 (registe.......) What? It rebooted, and then went into a graphical updating thing ..... same/similar message about not shutting down ....... 35% done ...... and eventually booted as I am typing ...... Oh man ...... that was weird!!!!

And, of course, you can make your own remaster, which would have meant you wouldn't have had to do a big upgrade or install the extra applications.

Hot dawg! Thanks for the reminder, kjpetrie. Of all the time I needed to remember (and I already scribbled it on my whiteboard) ... I have to be in this thread to get around to creating an updated remaster!

Any time we need an updated ISO, we can create a remaster. Ain't it great?!?!?

With the help of rpmorphan, I was able to trim my remaster down to 3.8GiB. Great! Any time I need to reinstall, I'm sure to get the same state as I have right now. Shouldn't y'all be remastering yours right about now?

Frankly, I just back up my data frequently and don't sweat the small stuff.

And you don't have to worry about the CD or DVD size limit, or having enough free space to create the image. I'm pretty good about backing up my data, so yeah - I think my way is good enoughand less hassle!

After checking out Mint 9 - 12 and a whole room full of CD/DVDs of different distros (yes I am a hopper) I have discovered this nice little distro and found it would run on my most troublesome laptop (aside from my iBook) an ancient Dell inspiron 1525 with NO modifications including RAM the way it came from the factory a few years back. THANK YOU !!!!! it saves me from having to revert it back to windoze XP
