I just wanted to post this for general information in case someone was shopping for a new desktop computer for 2012. I just purchased an Acer Aspire AX1420G desktop from the local Wal-Mart and wanted to share my experience with installing PCLinuxOS 2011.9 on it. Some specs on the machine are, Athlon X4 645 quad core, 4 GB of ram, Nvidia graphics and 1 TB HD (price $398) First I used Lucky Backup on my old machine to save all of my info including my email and kde and firefox settings to my external HD. I booted the live CD and left Win7 90 gigs of HD and used the rest for PCLinux. It took only a few minutes to get my partitions set up and after I clicked "Install" I was finished and booted to my desktop in "8" minutes, unbelievable. Everything, and I mean everything worked , 2 External HD's , printer, XD cards from my camera, Wacom tablet, flash drives, everything. I clicked on my external HD and moved my ".mozilla" and my ".thunderbird" and ".kde" folders over and I was up an running again in less than an hour. A great little computer and an "Awesome" operating system. Hope this helps anyone looking at the Acer Aspire Desktop.

Excellent!!

Have you installed Prey on it? (it's in the repos)  It's a "lojack for laptops" etc.....

More info on Prey can be found at:

==============

Note - a great many systems already come with monitoring software already embedded  (it just needs - errrrmm - "switching on")

This site shows a list of systems (inc. model numbers) with the Computrace Agent already installed - it says:

Our OEM partners embed the Computrace Agent into the firmware of computers and netbooks during the manufacturing process.  Customers who purchase these devices will benefit from an extra level of security, persistence and support.

Completely forgot that Desktop PCs never ever get stolen - I must of imagined the help it brought to people I know who've had there desktops stolen and recovered using Prey.

Sorry, I was just trying to help - won't post it again!

So sorry that you took my comment in a manner in which it WASN'T intended. Because desktop PCs are mostly stationary, I would have never thought of putting Prey on a desktop computer. Maybe I should never post a legitimate question ever again??
