we have kde4 installed on an old pc that i have corrupted. need to delete and install openbox. help please.

It is unnecessary to remove KDE4 to install openbox, or any other windows manager, so long as you can get into the existing system. I currently have KDE4 and LXDE installed on several systems.
On the login screen (where you enter your userid and password), there is a button that lets the user select which windows manager to use for this session.
I like having multiple windows managers; I have had times where one is not starting up correctly, and by logging in with a different one, I can recover my data and sometimes correct the problem with the malfunctioning windows manager.

thanks I'll try that. Actually, I think I corrupted Firefox. Can't get on the "net" the other parts seem to be working. Think I updated and just didn't do it right. I am still learning.

In firefox, check to see if you ticked - File > Work Offline.
