Hi all

Trying to install a Windows Canon Camera program under wine and it needs .NET framework v2.0 to run. I searched the web and this does run under wine, but winetricks keeps failing to install it. I get an error saying it has to close.

I've read lots on the web about you need a "clean WINEPREFIX" for it to work but I don't really understand this. This page here is useful:
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=3754
and it states that it will install on PCLinuxOS if done correctly.

I run a couple of programs very successfully under wine, and don't want to delete them to start wine fresh.  I'd appreciate a little help with this if you can.

Thanks as always  Smiley

NB - I have been running PCLinuxOS for over 4 years now and have still not found a better O/S out there. Thanks so much to all you hard working developers and helpers who help to keep this excellent distro as good as it is.  Smiley Smiley

Any Bugs in site?

You have not really explained what desktop environment you are using, failing to do so immediately encourages 'experts' to skip your topic.  Grin

Do you have the option to use second computer as a test bed?  Are you confident enough to run another partition and install second copy of your desktop environment here and sacrifice that while you experiment? Do you know about Virtual Machines ( I only know they can be extremely useful)

There may be merit in installing a fresh desktop environment, fully update it. Then install wine and follow up with your Canon Program (what is it?)

Hi wedgetail

You make some fair points. I'm running totally up to date PCLinuxOS 2011 with KDE desktop. I could run another partition and have a fiddle around, but I'd hoped for a simpler solution to try first. The canon program is one that came with my new EOS600 Canon camera. I can use Linux tools instead quite happily, but have come up with the same problem when trying to install other windows programs under wine so was looking for a generic .NET solution, rather than a specific one for this program alone.

I don't use wine any more, and I'm loathe to install it. From what I can tell, the WINEPREFIX tells wine which directory to start the session in. You may be able to figure out what to do by looking here and here.

Hello,
I have been trying to install the same package with wine as well.

I followed the information on there as well.
I think the wine side of things is actually working OK.It is when the windows installer running under wine gets to a certain point it encounters
"A serious error". and halts.
Like you I have successfully installed and run other windows software with wine.
I came to the conclusion .Net framework was failing to install when the setup program connected to the microsoft web site.
I suspect it could be failing a check for the presence of a genuine microsoft operating system being installed.
I encounter the same problem trying to install .NET framework on a Windows XP box which microsoft has decided is not genuine software.
As I inherited the computer off a relative and there is no XP installation disc I gave up.I can't update this computer with microsoft for the same reason.
It was the reason I thought to try wine on a Linux computer..

Hello,
I just remembered. You may find installing q4wine which is in the repository useful as you can do installations with different prefixes. There is also a program for installing and removing software in your fake windows drive very like the windows install remove program in the control panel of XP.

Just to get back to this topic, unfortunately I had a Hard Disc corruption problem and spent hours and hours chasing it down, so forgot to come back to report here on my progress.
The corruption problem meant I had to reinstall PCLinuxOS from scratch, and when I'd done that I thought I'd try winetricks again on a fresh install.... worked perfectly!
Sorry not to finish this thread earlier, but solved now.  Smiley

Ouch... I know what that one feels like. Running in circles and seemingly not getting any where. Hope you had a good backup  Smiley

Thanks for the winetricks report back.  Many months ago I spent a lot of time getting this to run my favourite text editor. Editor functions ran fine but I found I needed some fancy for me programming to get file operation to work in and out.  When my PCLOS at the time had a massive failure and was eventually rebuilt I left the programming alone.

The latest effort to run IrfanView showed similar problem, mostly operations were fine but graphics editing was not.

I have however cleaned out a number of partitions so I may think about setting up a KDE-mini and try only adding IrfanView and the text editor again.

Good luck with your new systems.  Grin
