2 questions: how would I clear whatever I would have to clear from a cache?  Is the cache a directory, or what?
The second: what is the KDE equivalent?  What I'm basically interested in is locating net
radio stations with a particular format
without too much hassle, and listening to them--maybe recording some of the material to the hd and eventually to CD. Some
of the software I have found has its own playlist built in, and if you don't like that format, you're out of luck.
As I said in my first post, I am not wedded to rhythmbox, but the descriptions seemed to me to be what I was looking for.

(Since I started this thread, I noticed that someone on one of the Gnome-type mailing lists is havi8ng some other kind
of trouble with rhythmbox.  Maybe this is a program one should avoid for the near-term.)

Thank you for leading me along the path and hopefully out of my ignorance!  --doug

I found that much of the time, the program still hung the machine, and I could not get to the check-box.  However, I kept at it,
and once I had the option to move the cursor and select DAPP and disable it.  Exited the program and tried to start it again--hang.
I found some other things were hung up also, but I could ctl-alt-bs.  That wasn't good enough, there were still things that didn't work
right. Cold-booted and tried again.  It still hangs the machine. It doesn't seem to matter if start from terminal or GUI, except terminal still puts up error messages.  I can't usually read them, since the r/b window covers up most of the terminal window.  There seems to be
some kind of race condition with this software, since occasionally it tries to work.  I don't know enough about how the system works,
but r/b seems to get right into the operating system and louse things up.

You mentioned KDE equivalents. I'd like to know what you suggest.  To be frank, I have had very little success with any of the
music programs I've tried, but at least nothing else destroyed system operation, and just going in to Google and selecting a station
I know exists usually works.  That doesn't give me the option to save any cuts, however.

I am assuming that rhythmbox-radio-browser requires rhythmbox, altho I haven't tried that yet. Do you happen to know?

I found a /.cache directory, which contains a /rhythmbos subdir. Do you think it's still worth while to scrub the program and change repos, or is it time to give up?

When you uninstall it from within Synaptic, you can look at the menu Categories > Preferences > tab Files > click on the button "Remove from cache". The cache is the directory where Synaptic stores the installed packages. Default is they are not kept in the cache. If you have not changed this setup the cache is probably empty.

Amarok, and lighter than Amarok : Clementine. What particular format of radio ?

I am not a user of a KDE environment, I just give you an idea to try. It might work or not work.

For Radio Stations you could try radiotray

Description

Radio Tray is an online radio streaming player that runs on a Linux system tray. Its goal is to have the minimum interface possible, making it very straightforward to use. Radio Tray is not a full featured music player, there are plenty of excellent music players already. However, there was a need for a simple application with minimal interface just to listen to online radios. And that's the sole purpose of Radio Tray.

There is also a new release of Rhythmbox (2.95)

================================

From Reviewlinux

After a year, we finally have a new Rhythmbox release – 2.95, and the major change is that it has been ported to GTK+ 3. For the past year, most Linux distributions have packaged Rhythmbox from GIT because even though the Rhythmbox development is active, there were no new releases.

Besides full GNOME 3 support, the new version also comes with a redesign for some UI parts and according to the changelog, this is only the beginning. For now, it doesn’t look anything like the “Music” mockups we’ve seen a while back though.

Other changes in Rhythmbox 2.95:

    new album art database
Grilo plugin for UPNP and Jamendo
    Rewritten visualization plugin (using clutter)
    New encoding profile system
    Plugins now based on libpeas
Much improved dbus media server plugin

So when will this new version 2.95 be added to the repos?  Is there a way that I can be notified when it is?

Hi,

Sure, either open regularly Synaptic to do your normal updates, or and install update-notifier and configure it to be informed every so many days about the updates currently available ? Smiley
