Hi. I have used PCLinuxOS for 3 years. I am extremly impressed by how easy everything installs and works. This was true until I upgraded to the 2011 versions: Suddenly all prints jobs stop at the middle of first page without any evident errors. I had to go back to a 2010 version to make it work again. I have checked the driver settings on both versions of PCLinuxOS and they seem to be the same. Any idea how I can make my printing work on latest version? Thanks.

If you want help with your problem you are going to have to give those that are going to try to help some information besides what you have.  It stops working doesn't tell one anything at all.  How about which printer you are using (make and model)? How it is connected to your machine? (parallel port, usb, wireless) Which driver for it is being used. Since you said it was 2011, which version was it, (2011.9, 2011.12) has it been FULLY updated?  The more information that you give about your system, the faster someone will be able to help out getting your issue resolved.  Don't expect a lot of help if you don't give us the information need to help out.

Yes he did say that until he upgraded from 2010 to 2011 then he started having issues, and went back to 2010 to make it work again.

Yeah, I know I didn't give much to chew on but I hoped that someone had come across it before.

So, details:
- It "prints OK" but stops in the middle of any page I try to make
- Printer: Canon LBP-660
- Connected with parallell port
- Driver is suggested and provided by PCLinusOS during installation
- I have tried both version 2011.6 and latest 2011.9 (installed from ISO image) with the same negative result even with latest updates
- My CUPS information for my printer is:

Description:   CANON LBP-660
Location:
Driver:   Canon LBP-660 Foomatic/lbp660 (recommended) (grayscale, 2-sided printing)
Connection:   file:/dev/null
Defaults:   job-sheets=none, none media=iso_a4_210x297mm sides=one-sided

Any more information required?

Thanks

I see you have CUPS running so, open a konsole and copy/paste

Edit: there should not be a t after lp I have corrected below

Quote
lpstat - t

Post the result here

I have corrected a very annoying mistake that I made in the command line statement I gave in my previous post, I hope you did not give up if you have seen that line.

Here you go...

$ lpstat -t
scheduler is running
system default destination: CANONLBP660
device for CANONLBP660: /dev/null
CANONLBP660 accepting requests since Tue 18 Oct 2011 04:52:08 AM CEST
printer CANONLBP660 is idle.  enabled since Tue 18 Oct 2011 04:52:08 AM CEST

I will try to run live install of 02-02-2012 today to check if my printer
will work with that version.

 Huh

The device doesn't look correct ... it should be something like /dev/lp0 or so ...

Hi.

The output from lpstat in my last post with:
    "device for CANONLBP660: /dev/null"
   ( in CUPS settings : "Connection:   file:/dev/null")
was form the installation that *works OK* after installation (2010 versions).

On any later installation (2011 and 2012) the corresponding value is:
   device for CANONLBP660: /dev/lp0
   ( in CUPS settings : "Connection:   parallel:/dev/lp0")
which leads to my original problem: Prints stops after printing
just half a page.

I agree, "/dev/lp0" looks much better than "/dev/null" but
the latter setting makes my printing work OK.

This led my to do an experiment: I again installed latest
PCLinuxOS (2-2012) and confirmed that printing still dosn't
work (even with all latest updates).
I then changed the printer settings *from* "parallel:/dev/lp0"
*to* "file:/dev/null" and guess what: Now printing works OK!

So just now I have a workaround I can live with but
it would be nice to know why this hack works and is
a fix needed in the distribution?

Regards

Edit: Added this first item as the 2 others more relevant later, depending on this:

In a root konsole run following and post the result:

Code:
[root@localhost gert]# lpinfo -v

Should be something like this:

Quote
[root@localhost gert]# lpinfo -v
network socket
direct scsi
network http
network lpd
network ipp
direct parallel:/dev/lp0  < ------- this is the one showing cups has registered parrallel port presence
[root@localhost gert]#

You can copy paste this to a konsole window, it is your install that is used as example.
Code:
lpoptions -p CANONLBP660

An this one, carefull they look the same almost but they are different

Code:
lpoptions -p CANONLBP660 -l

There is something about the parallelport I have not figured out yet. It is not registered by CUPS but this may be because of the change to /dev/null  Need some more information.

From konsole run these and post result:

Code:
lsmod | grep lp

Code:
lsmod | grep ppdev

Code:
lsmod | grep parport_pc

Code:
ls -l /dev/lp* /dev/parport*

Code:
dmesg | grep par

This is getting harder, and I get more tenacious.   Grin The interesting thing is that on my test OS where I got CUPS showing it had registered the paralell port (red line in one of my previous posts here).

Today I don't get this line any more, could not believe my eyes. The system has been doing a lot of other things in the meantime so I have nor idea what made the change.

Need you to run the following, it is sthe same command but run as <user> and then as <root>

Quote
[gert@KDE-mini-Cprog ~]$ /usr/lib/cups/backend/parallel

Quote
[root@KDE-mini-Cprog gert]# /usr/lib/cups/backend/parallel

This may give you a one liner result

Also post the following
Code:
cat /proc/sys/dev/parport/parport0/autoprobe
