My machine has been playing up a bit today - my DVD Drive wouldn't play ball, then my usb sticks failed to show up in Dolphin. Then my panel disappeared and so on. I suspected a loose memory stick so opened up the case and had a look around but saw nothing amiss. Then I checked the temperature and found it to be 49C. We have had a few hot days recently and today was 38C. So I left the case open and let it cool down for a few hours. But now the temp is down to the 30s and it should work. So I just switched on and got the error in the Subject line - Grub loading. Error 2I need help on this - I'm using my wife's machine while she's busy wrapping presents but she's nearly finished. Many thanks and a Happy Christmas to all.

Try removing and re-seating each of the memory sticks, two or three times each, to reestablish good contact along its full length. Do the same for the data cables connecting your hard drives and optical drives, unplugging and replugging both ends of the data cables, and also the power plug where it attaches to each device. With a flashlight/torch, look past the CPU cooling fan to check if there's dirt or hair clogging the CPU heat sink fins, blocking clean air flow. Remove the fan if necessary, and clean with a China bristle paint brush acting as a whisk broom, to clean between the fins. I do the above, routinely, about every 4-6 months. Actually I do a full tear down of the machine, just for cleaning and inspection purposes. When that's all done, try rebooting to see if the problem is corrected. If not, we've at least eliminated the above as possible sources, and can dig a bit deeper into the hard drive and system settings.

I agree - my post was a bit vague and wishy washy. Reseat the memory sticks two or three times. If the white clips are in the down position, that's usually good enough for me. You're a bit of a perfectionist I reckon. I can see I'll have to be a little less slipshod. About the only time I clean my machine is when I want to sell it. To do the job as you would then I'll have to leave it until tomorrow as the sun's well past the yard-arm over here. Get back to you tomorrow and the season's greetings. Maurice

Thanks ternor but I'll clean the machine first as old-polack advised. He's everywhere isn't he?

I spent this morning cleaning the machine, even used alcohol wipes on the memory sticks, unseated and reseated all the connections I could see and finished with a good vacuuming. Used the livecd and did an fsck -f. It came up with scores of errors so I was fairly confident when I started up again that all would be well. Alas all was not well. All I got was Error 15

Hello old-polack - have I offended you with my chicken references? If so then I apologise profusely. But there were a couple of ;Ds there. . Anyway I couldn't get past the error 15. I did a lot of searching, ran the livecd a few times and tried 'mount /dev/sda2 /mnt' in a terminal but that only gave me the contents of the livecd, so I finally deleted it and reinstalled. So - solved sort of - the easy way out.

I've just been busy with work on the house, trying to beat the full winter freeze, so my time online is fairly limited lately. I poke my nose in, see if anything's there I might help with, then go back to work on the house. Sorry you had to resort to a reinstall, but sometimes that's the quickest solution. Luckily it's a pretty easy solution with PCLinuxOS. Have a Happy New Year!

I don't envy you your coming winter freeze - we get all those awful winter pictures on TV from the US and England every year. I think I'd rather fry than freeze - and I probably will as we're expecting 39C (110F) on January 1st. Best wishes for the New Year Maurice
