I tried the PCCC printer config and now it works, finds the correct printer, and prints the Cups test page. But when I try to print from an app like Firefox or Libre Office, the "problem" light on the printer comes on and the printer goes dead. They seem to show the right printer in the print requester windows.

Progress, I guess, but still no cigar.

This is not the same command as before as you will see.  I may need this for later steps.

Ok, looking at the first command line post post with information.

1.. we can instantly see that you have not selected a default printer (not important as such here)
2.. you are using a parallel port connection t your printer, I have not found any mention of that in this thread before (may have missed it, but that is very important to know, for example I run all mine over a network and subconsciously asume everybody does this today Cheesy )
3.. more important to me I have got your printer que name
4.. some printer que management information, not important right now

I notice you have just sent the reply to the configuration, the reason I want that is it will save me many questions, already I don't like it one bit   Cheesy

What printer driver do you think you have installed?? This time does not matter how you try to find out Grin
No the penny has dropped here. Absolutely brilliant circumstance of confusion for me. I love it   Roll Eyes

Edit:

There is one file I would like you to keep/make a copy of before you do anything below, I have constructed the file and I think it should be correct for your situation.  I would like to have a look in that. Don't post it in forum, let me know when you have it and I will PM you an email address used for this sort:

/etc/cups/ppd/HP_LaserJet_6MP.ppd

It is an ordinary looking text file. Back to the problem.

Quote
[carol@localhost ~]$ lpoptions -p HP_LaserJet_6MP
The highlighted is is one of your print que name (in CUPS speak) if you have installed more than one, which is quite sensible and using the same physical printer.  In this case it is the printer in your system

auth-info-required=none
copies=1
device-uri=hp:/par/HP_LaserJet_6MP?device=/dev/parport0
another important line for the knowledgeable

finishings=3
InputSlot=Lower
job-hold-until=no-hold
job-priority=50
job-sheets=none,none
marker-change-time=0
number-up=1
printer-commands=AutoConfigure,Clean,PrintSelfTestPage
printer-info='HPLaserJet 6MP'
You really have a 6MP

printer-is-accepting-jobs=true
printer-is-shared=false
printer-location=hp

printer-make-and-model='HPLaserJet 6mp hpijs pcl3, 3. 11. 10'
This may be quite a good hint. I was very close at missing this too notice the mp6
but the hpijs made me stop and think.

printer-state=3
printer-state-change-time=1327108616
printer-state-reasons=none
printer-type=10522652
printer-uri-supported=ipp://localhost:631/printers/HP_LaserJet_6MP

What got me is that there really is such a driver as highlighted below, which you davey must have selected.
Notice the lower case mp6 (I have overcome a forum html problem by adding spacers in 3. 11. 10) to show the real text

Quote
printer-make-and-model='HPLaserJet 6mp hpijs pcl3, 3. 11. 10'

My install uses the following driver ( there are more that could be used, but it was just chosen at rando as I did not know what you had):

Quote
printer-make-and-model='HP LaserJet 6MP - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.7'

Just before I go further:

Quote
[gert@localhost ~]$ lpoptions -p HP_LaserJet_6MP -l

[carol@localhost ~]$ lpoptions -p HP_LaserJet_6MP -l
PageSize/Media Size: *Letter A4 Photo Photo5x7 3x5 5x8 A5 A6 B5JIS CDDVD80 CDDVD120 Env10 EnvC5 EnvC6 EnvDL EnvISOB5 EnvMonarch Executive FLSA Hagaki Legal Oufuku w558h774 w612h935 Custom.WIDTHxHEIGHT
PrintoutMode/Printout Mode: Draft *Normal High
InputSlot/Media Source: Default PhotoTray Upper *Lower CDDVDTray Envelope LargeCapacity Manual MPTray
Duplex/Double-Sided Printing: DuplexNoTumble DuplexTumble *None
Quality/Resolution, Quality, Ink Type, Media Type: *FromPrintoutMode 300DraftGrayscaleK 300GrayscaleK 600GrayscaleK
[carol@localhost ~]$

Above in my opinion is a bit suspect, I think this may be an inkjet driver and there is some screw up here which I don't quite understand as it is the first time I have come across such a setup. (but I don't remember well either  Cheesy). I will check on the 6MP.

The situation is following:

1.. You hang in here and carefully follow a few more steps, please don't rush and try to fix things, there may be some gold nuggets of information hidden in all this.

2.. I would recommend at this stage you change the driver to My driver shown above, but if you do not want to do that we can carry on with what you have and figure why it does not print.

3.. When you have chose your direction, we will attempt making sure that CUPS does the right thing by printing out a specific file from the command line.

4.. I have just looked in my Laserjet 2300dn and this also has parallel printer port, if need be I will find a printer cable and run with that.

This should end up with knowing that the CUPS is working Then we will look at the various applications as they may each have individual problems.

I am late to this thread but I also have a HP 6MP and was frustrated the other day when some pages printed without any space at top of page.

I have not used the printer that much since so I really haven't noticed when this occurs or why.  I will try and notice more over the coming days.

FWIW, I cannot get the recommended command that I copied above,  "lpoptions -p HP_LaserJet_6MP -l" ,  to even work on my system.  Even though the printer is hooked up and turned on?    What is that all about?

[james@localhost ~]$ lpoptions -p HP_LaserJet_6MP -l
lpoptions: Unable to get PPD file for HP_LaserJet_6MP: The printer or class was not found.

Cressida

It is unlikely that your printer que name, or what you will call the "printer" is the same, if you read carefully earlier on following was used to show the specific que name.

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,100959.msg867309.html#msg867309

Quote
[carol@localhost ~]$ lpstat -t

In daveys case, I have highlighted the printer que name, or "printer name" yours should look similar

Quote
[carol@localhost ~]$ lpstat -t
scheduler is running
no system default destination
device for HP_LaserJet_6MP: hp:/par/HP_LaserJet_6MP?device=/dev/parport0
HP_LaserJet_6MP accepting requests since Fri 20 Jan 2012 04:25:18 PM CST
printer HP_LaserJet_6MP is idle.  enabled since Fri 20 Jan 2012 04:25:18 PM CST
HP_LaserJet_6MP-1       carol            59392   Fri 20 Jan 2012 04:31:18 PM CST
HP_LaserJet_6MP-2       carol           422912   Fri 20 Jan 2012 04:54:49 PM CST
[carol@localhost ~]$

In daveys case it was exactly this HP_LaserJet_6MP

Run the same command on your system, you can copy/paste this to konsole: lpstat -t

Post the result by copy/paste here.  There are other GUI ways of getting the printer name but it often becomes a time wasted exercise to drag the information out of people. This is why I generally work only with CUPS and only the small  part that I know about.

Unless you are a CUPS administrator for big company  Grin go back to the stage in this topic  and follow/do in order on your system:

Quote

lpstat -t  <----- will reveal the printername, xxxxx , with care??

lpoptions -p xxxxx

lpoptions -p xxxxx -l

The result of these 3 lines gives a marvellous foundation of facts to start solving problems without having to ask the user many questions.

I would recommend that you start your own topic with the result of those 3 commands for starter. Then leave a link here (so I get the automatic notification).  Thus the specific customised statements for your particular situation will not get confused with those in this topic. As an example you are likely to use different printer driver and perhaps also physical connection.

By the way if your printer que name really is what you have used, this would be a juicy problem, lay it on.   Grin.

Hello, anybody still there? I couldn't get at this computer for a while, and kind of forgot about the problem, not hearing any complaints. However the thing won't print at all now: any attempt and the printer shuts down with the "problem" light on (after the "printing" lights flash briefly as if it's going to work.).

New info: I tried creating a new user, and under that printing is just fine. That has to be a giant clue, but not for me. I guess I could just delete the original user and redo the desktop config, bookmarks, etc, and make this the default user. Or does this point to something specific to change in the original user's config? Any thoughts?

PS -- Then I thought I'd try printing (from Libre Office) as Root. That worked, too, so I guess that puts the problem in the user config of something or other, right? Not that I'd let this user go around working as Root, ever.

I would suggest getting the information from the 3 lines I mentioned in my previous post here.  You can take them one at a time but if they look like the examples post all 3. The facts allows experienced people to comment. It is slower road to a solution or/and diagnosis but works.

Since you know printing works as another user, you could re-install printer and see.  May work.

The result of above looks normal to me.

The next step I think just some confirmation for me, in a root terminal:

Code:

[root@localhost gert]# lpinfo -v

This will give something like following

Code:
[root@localhost gert]# lpinfo -v
network beh
network socket
direct scsi
network http
network lpd
direct pdf
network ipp
network dnssd://hp%20LaserJet%202300%20series%20(0001E69FE6CE)._printer._tcp.local/
network dnssd://hp%20LaserJet%202300%20series%20(0001E69FE6CE)._pdl-datastream._tcp.local/
network dnssd://hp%20LaserJet%202300%20series%20(0001E69FE6CE)._ipp._tcp.local/
network socket://192.168.1.4
[root@localhost gert]#

Be patient, the result may take a number of seconds with an apparent hang before the prompt line returns.

While you are in the root terminal, I would like the last 25 lines of the cups_error_log, you will get this by:

Code:
[root@localhost gert]# tail -25 /var/log/cups/error_log
.......

25 lines from log
.......
[root@localhost gert]#

Post those lines.
