I just installed Openbox 2011-08 in my second HDD and I noticed that there is no sound at startup for user and password identification. I had the same problem in my PCLinuxOS LXDE 2011-09 in the main HDD and I solved it after installation of several packages from Synaptic, but I can't recall which one was. In addition, I have Volume Icon 0.4.3 twice in the lower bar. This happened after I installed VLC additional packages and plugins. Please advice. Thank you.

Go to - /home/user/.config/openbox/autostart.sh Open autostart.sh in the editor. Put a # in front of volumeicon as below. # volume of sound #volumeicon & Can't recall about any login sounds. Have a good one.

Hi, In console type: $ dbus-launch gdmsetup you will be prompted for the root password. Then at the 4th tab from the left you have a section to configure a sound. The sounds are in /usr/share/sounds/freedesktop. There are not many, and I think you can add your's. Regards, Mélodie PS: I uploaded a more recent version in November, which has not replaced the one in the repos. The thread is here.

I obtained a message indicating that gdm is not running. "GDM (GNOME Display Manager) is not running. You might be using a different display manager, such as KDM (KDE Display Manager), CDE login (dtlogin), or xdm. If you wish to use this feature, then your system will need to be configured to use GDM instead." I am in PCLinuxOS Openbox 2011-08, just starting to use it.

Go to -
/home/user/.config/openbox/autostart.sh
Open autostart.sh in the editor.
Put a # in front of volumeicon as below.
# volume of sound #volumeicon &
Can't recall about any login sounds.
Have a good one.
Ferdes Fides, thank you for your post. I applied the modification to autostart.sh and the volumeicon duplication was solved. Now I have to figure out how to produce sounds at login.

If you typed the command in a tty, it can't work. Go to GDM login screen, hit configure, give the root password and you will get the same gui where you can configure the sound as said above. Else, login to the graphical session and type as user "dbus-launch gdmsetup".

melodie: I ran $ dbus-launch gdmsetup in tty root terminal (updated correction) and in the 4th tab from the left, in Accessibility, I activated sounds: login screen ready and login successful, both with desktop-login.ogg from /usr/share/sounds/freedesktop, rebooted, but obtained no sound. I don't know if this is relevant, but when I ran $ dbus-launch gdmsetup there was an error: "gdmsetup[4291]: Gtk-WARNING: GtkSpinButton: setting an adjustment with non-zero page size is deprecated"

Hi unist,
No, it is not relevant. And what you say doesn't seem to have any sense to me. You don't type in tty : you type in console in a X session, otherwise you can't have the window. tty's are virtual consoles also named "vc" : you access to them by pressing together the keyboard keys "Alt+Ctrl+F1", this is tty1, then "Alt+Ctrl+F2", this is tty2 : you have 6 of them default configured and then you press "Ctrl+Alt+F7" or same with F8 to get back to the X session or X login. (X = graphical).
So forget about gdmsetup and try directly from the GDM login screen. Check that the sound files can be found too.

Thank you melodie for your kind attention. I'll apply your suggestions once I return home. I recognize that I need to learn more Linux. Your help is very valuable. Update: I corrected my previous post (reply #6) changing the word tty for root terminal.
