Just found this:
http://intellinuxgraphics.org/dualhead.html

the head up are: you need to specify two monitor sections, each one with it's own settings, you will also need to list both option monitor in your device section, and to define a default monitor in screen section, note also about Option "Position" and Option "LeftOf".

(you may need to revert back the chattr settings, to edit xorg.conf, and then to reapply them)

SUCCESS!!!

System now boots (and reboots! Grin) with the desired settings --- 1366 x 768 on the external monitor and 1024 x 600 on the netbook monitor -- and each are "extensions" of the other (not clones).

I did everything in xorg.conf, with some help from xrandr (just to see the position of LVDS1)
