I have ordered a SSD for my new build.  I was leaning toward all-linux without a windows drive this time since I have so many spare machines that do dual boot.  But, from reading comments on this drive I see that a firmware update will likely be needed upon arrival.  Mfr provides a windows program that creates the USB boot disk although the actual update is done in DOS.  Is there a workaround if I don't put windows on my new machine?  To install windows I am going to have install a stinkin floppy drive to load the raid.  (I have heard of some slipstream thing but can't quite grasp it - easier to plug in a floppy drive).  Hmmm, I could temporarily install the SSD in one of the spares and flash it in there, maybe?

Thoughts?  Any of you without access to a windows machine merrily updating your SSD firmware?  Does Samsung just suck?

This is the manual for the update http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/FM/201105/20110506084814993/Samsuing_SSD_FW_Update_Utility_Manual_Rev.1.2_EN.pdf

I had a similar quandary with BIOS updates on another board only available for windows and ended up giving in and putting windows and a floppy drive in there.

The fimware is usually contained on the boot floppy/CD,  no?

So it wouldn't matter what OS was installed as it would not get used.

A lot of manufacturers now release ISOs and floppy images for such updates.
The last one I used to check a drive ran on FreeDOS ... from the manufacturer ..

The windows utility creates the usb boot drive and uses FreeDOS.  I am not sure how to get what is needed on a usb boot drive without using the utility which is a windows app.  So will see if it will install on a spare machine that has windows.

FreeDOS and other utilities for creating boot floppies are in the repository  Wink
