This evening when I arrived home, I turned on my PCLinuxOS system and it came up with 640 x 480 resolution.  I did a restart.

The same thing happened again.  640 x 480.

I went into PCC and checked the video card set up.  For some reason Nvidea was not selected.  So, I selected  "NVidia GeForce 6100 to GeForce 360."  I did a restart and again, up came 640 x 480.  The control panel gave no higher resolution.

I did a complete shut down and start up.  Things finally came up at the proper resolution of 1680 x 1050.

I double checked my video card and it's an Nvidia G96 (GeForce 9400 GT).

Am I running the correct drivers? Pretty sure I am.

@Mark, you'll need to relogin (or better, reboot) when you select new drivers for your video or sound. The changes don't just take effect on the fly.

As for whether it is the correct driver, there should be an indication on the package as to what range of cards it would support so it is best that you check there.

Yes.  I did a reboot (restart) each time.  It was when I did a complete shut down and then powered up that things took hold correctly.

Sounds as if the GPU was in a strange state that prevented it working properly. Powering off reset it.

CTRL + ALT+ Backspace should be enough, to restart the XServer

Weird things can happen.  When you did your "complete" shutdown, did that include the monitor?  Perhaps the system was having a problem reading the EDID from it?  If so, powering it down, also would have reset everything...

Glad you're running OK, now.

That makes sense.  On reboot/restart, the monitor did not fully power off.
