I am very pleased to announce what I put forward as a proof of concept iso

PCLinuxOS-Light (RAW Edition) will (hopefully) be the ideal solution for anyone wanting a base to build from that does not want to have pre-conceived ideas of what should be or shoudl not be included in a light iso.

As it is atm RAW will take you to a (deliberatley) theme-less minimalistic window manager (icewm-light) on right clicking on the desktop it has only the standard configuration menu (configure my computer , the install function, user admin etc ), a file manager (mc) bleachbit, and synaptic , thats pretty much it.

The aim here is to install the iso (which is gzip'd not xz to help with lower ram installs) then add what you want, without any influence from me. (next time I will have both a gzip and a xz iso available)

In fact originally I was not going to include a file manager, although found that I needed one during the creation of the iso so mc stayed as its a good toolkit (editor, filemanagement, ftp, ssh etc etc ).

It may also be a good test bed for new rpms - to ensure all necessary dependencies are mentioned.

In all its pretty RAW..

The iso is 375MB.

I think this information should be included in the first post since its critical information since the size could be the iso selling point.

Thanks updated

This is a GZipped iso so it is larger than it would otherwise be (lower level of compression) makes using it as a LiveCD lighter on older machines

I will look into supplying a smaller XZipped iso after the initial tests

so far so good. I installed XFCE on top of it and that went smoothly, as did VLC, Firefox, Deadbeef, Songbird. I tried installing gedit but there is one or more mising dependencies, not sure what.
edit: have gedit installed. might of been system-conf-printer which I needed to install gnome-games.

Thank you Hootie! Can't wait to hack experiment with this one Cheesy

Question: If I build on this and re-master, will I be able to use mylivecd on it at that time with xz compression? (I know I need to have xz installed first).

Dragynn,

Its all there - it defaults to xz compression, wanna see a comparative on a 1200meg install one using gzip the other xz, look no further

DOWNLOAD :
MD5SUM :

SIZE : 297.8Megs

Same iso as above but in xz compression

Finally...the pclos version I've been waiting forever for !  A dream come true Hootie, Tex and others I'm sure....thank you.
I hope we get a x64 version too soon.

I mentioned my first try was borked ...it was the cdrom I was using.  Swapped it out and installed task-xfce, xchat, ffox.

Rebooted and all works fine so far on my Abit KU-8  Sempron 2800+ 1gb ram system.   A clean xfce boot uses ¬ 150mb ram but once synaptic and ffox is used once it goes to 465mb ram which is very acceptable.    I'll install task-lamp which is what I wanted this version for and see how that goes later.

Sounds like you have a corrupt download or bad burn, scoundrel.
