After many exhortations to give PCLOS a try, I got a message from my son this morning that really warmed my heart:

  Incidentally,  I was able to get wireless working very easily with the PC Linux CD you gave me.   it worked a lot easier than the XP rebuild - that will not work at all!!
 
Thanks again for providing it!

Apparently, he'd had some virus problems and tried to reinstall  -  and then PCLOS came to the rescue. Another potential convert. His son is using a LiveCD already. Both are using 2011.09.
